Discover Jalan Surabaya Antique Market - Jakarta

Overview

Shopping is always one of the best ways to end a successful vacation. After spending a lot of time roaming around the streets of foreign markets, museum hallways, and sandy beaches, it is always great to have a reminder or token from the country you visited. Although majority of the tourists prefer purchasing items that have the country’s name on the product, or bring home a box full of the nation’s famous treats, buying something in the antique category projects a more alluring appearance that accurately represents a traveler’s entire visiting experience. In the city of Jakarta, Indonesia, there is a special market that caters to those who have an interest in traditional and “old” goods – the Jalan Surabaya Antique Market.

Just like any buzzing market, Jalan Surabaya attracts visitors – both local and foreign – because of the array of wares that are displayed on the market floor. However, this place offers a more unique and quirky atmosphere, because, instead of surrounding the shoppers with live fish, fruits, and the like, the stage highlights products that have aged glamorously over the years. The market has stalls filled with gramophones with charming patinas, wooden sculptures that depict Indonesian culture, and statues that are 25 to 100 years old. Travelers strolling around the winding pathways of Jalan Surabaya will feel like they have entered a whimsical museum that shows the history of Indonesia with local art.

Now, for first time visitors, Trip Guru would like to advise that you brush up on your haggling skills. There is no definite price for a lot of these items so be fair when you give your price. Also, it is good to bring someone along who has an extensive knowledge of the area, because some of the products that are displayed are not authentic. Lastly, do not feel bad if you think the price of the item you want to buy is too high. There are a multitude of stalls that sell the same product for a cheaper price – you just need to roam around a little bit more in the market.

To get to Jalan Surabaya Antique Market from central Jakarta, you can walk to Gondangdia and head towards the train, K.A 1388 and get off at Cikini station and from there, you can walk to Jalan Surabaya Antique Market. It is open from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.
