Discover Koh Rong Sanloem - Sihanoukville
Koh Rong Samloem is the type of place close enough to visit, and yet far enough to imagine yourself living in a completely different world. For one, it's extremely basic, and while there are plans to expand Koh Rong Samloem into a more commercial area, that is still in the future. But in the meantime, if you're looking for a way to completely be alone with your thoughts and to be as close to nature as possible then a visit to Koh Rong Samloem is what Trip Guru would be happy to suggest for you.
Just one thing to remember -- Koh Rong Samloem is a new tourist destination. It's the sort of place that has the resorts running on their own diesel or gasoline generator. There's no main electricity source, shops and ATMs , so you have to bring extra cash. Still, some resorts have Wifi and people spend a day or two on the island, making it into a retreat of sorts before returning to the city. If you wanted to have the feeling of a private island getaway for a spiritual retreat, this is the best place to have it.
Koh Rong Samloem has beaches on the east and western sides of the island. To east is Saracen bay with crystal-white sand and shallow waters. To the west, there's pale-golden sand, and the wind is calm, so people find themselves drawn to this portion of the island. You can walk and explore the jungle if you need a change of oace, and even pay a visit to a lighthouse, where you can see a spectacular view over nearly the entire island. Bring a flashlight, because it can get pretty dark on the way back—making it all the more enjoyable.
Koh Rong Samloem can be reached using two fast boats per day from Sihanoukville's Serendipity pier to Saracen Bay, and depending on the boat you choose can get you there from 20 - 45 minutes. So it is possible to just take a day trip to see the east side of the island. Make sure you bring extra money for any emergencies, and bring insect repellant against sand flies!
