Discover Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater - Yogyakarta

Overview

If there's one volcano in Indonesia you have got to visit, it's Mount Bromo. It's on the Eastern side of Java, right in the middle of Surabaya and Yogyakarta. Mount Bromo is a beautiful crater that gently blows white smoke, seated inside the Tengger caldera. If you favor mountain climbing, there's no better climb Trip Guru can suggest, other than Mount Bromo and the Ijen Crater.

Now, the trek towards Bromo involves walking across a gorgeous sand sea, and climbing a set of stairs to the crater's opening. From there, you can feast your eyes on views like never before—vistas of perfect landscape amongst a backdrop of blue sky. On this portion of the hike, you can either get a jeepney tour, or you can continue walking up the mountain. The climb can last you for two hours or more for exercise, but the view that awaits you is worth all of the trouble. You can really feel a sense of accomplishment for your efforts, as well.

Kawah Ijen, on the other hand is something special, because it's Indonesia's blue-fire volcano. The volcano itself is gorgeous, but one activity you absolutely cannot afford to miss is to hike amongst the stars, and wait for a beautiful sunrise for photographs that come once in a lifetime. If you aren’t the type who wants to be with many tourists, it may be worth your while to climb early in the morning, while the stars are out and the sun is just about to shine. On your way up, you might catch a glimpse of some workers carrying sulfur, and if you’re lucky, they may offer to guide you to your destination.

To get to Mount Bromo, take a bus bound for Probolinggo in Yogyakarta, where it's a four hour ride. From Probolinggo, another bus will take you to Cemoro Lawang, which is the base of Bromo. For Kawah Ijen, you can take a train from Yogyakarta or Surabaya and go to Karangasem station, or a ferry from Bali to Ketapang.

I visited this place twice, and let me tell you that the view here during the day is as breath-taking as the one at night. Sure, it took me some time to get to the top, but the hike was so worth it. Definitely gonna do this again with my friends.
