Lempuyang Temple Place guide

Photographers and active social media users will want to visit the highly ‘Instagrammable’ Lempuyang Temple, also known as Pura Lempuyang Luhur, situated at the peak of Mount Lempuyang in east Bali. One of the oldest temples in Bali, its significance is regarded as on a par with the Besakih ‘Mother Temple.’ Considered as part of a complex of temples surrounding Mount Lempuyang, the main temple of Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagad, one of six holiest places of worship in Bali.

The famous ‘Gateway to Heaven’ candi bentar is best seen on a calm clear day at sunrise or sunset, with its towering sculpted pillars reflected in the water below, framing a stunning backdrop of the mountain range. While many couples try and get in a scenic kissing photo op, PDA is strictly not allowed in the temple.

Pura Lempuyang Luhur is actually only one of several Lempuyang Temples, and while the other temples located along the slope of the mountain are well worth seeing, it will take quite a climb up and down steep staircases.

The temple has no entrance fee, but asks for donations. Donations of IDR10,000-30,000 are acceptable, and they are the usual entrance fee to other temples. A sarong is required to enter, so bring your own or rent from their entrance booth at IDR10,000 per sarong.

GETTING THERE

The Lempuyang Temples are along the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in east Bali and the drive takes upwards of two hours coming from south Bali. The best way to get there is by private car or motorbike rental or joining a tour that stops at the temples.
