Discover Maokong Gondola - Taipei
For travelers who want to see a scenic view of Taipei, Trip Guru suggests a leisurely ride on the Maokong Gondola. There are four stations on the cable car line: Taipei Zoo Station, Taipei Zoo South Station, Zhinan Temple Station, and Maokong Station. Fare will depend on the number of stations traveled.
There are two types of cabins: Regular and "Eyes of Maokong" Crystal Cabins. The Crystal Cabins have reinforced glass floors, providing an exhilarating view of the scenery. While there is no difference in fares for the cabins, you must specify which type you want to take. Trip Guru recommends taking the route from Taipei Zoo Station to Maokong Station for the best sightseeing experience on the Maokong Gondola. On clear days, Taipei 101 is visible from the Maokong Gondola, the skyscraper rising majestically beyond the forested hills. Maokong is renowned as a tea village. At Maokong Station are relaxing teahouses, a Tea Promotion Center, the Tea Museum, the colorful Tianen and Zhangshan temples, and scenic trails. Take a trip back on the line in the evening for a different view of the route.
Since Maokong is a rural area, the seasons lend their colors to the scenery changing the experience when strolling through the area or viewing the scene from above. During Apricot Blossom Season in January - February, around 2,000 apricot trees in the area blossom with delicate white, red, or pink flowers. During the Lupin Season of March to April, the lupins planted along the Camphor trail, bloom vibrant yellow flowers amongst the green of the plantations. The Tung Tree Blossom Season from April to May covers the area with small white flowers like a blanket of snow. The popular Crystal Cabins have a longer wait time than the Regular cabin. The Crystal Cabin's reinforced glass floor may not be suitable for everyone. Travelers with acrophobia, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other physical/medical conditions are advised to take the Regular cabin.
To get to Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo Station, take the MRT Brown (Wenshan-Neihu) Line to Taipei Zoo. The Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo Station is 350m from the Metro Station. The Maokong Gondola is closed on Mondays for maintenance except when a national holiday falls on a Monday; Tuesday to Thursday: 9:00AM to 9:00PM; Friday and day before a national holiday: 9:00AM - 10:00PM; Saturday and national holidays: 8:30AM to 10:00PM; Sundays and last day of national holidays: 8:30AM to 9:00PM. Operating hours will change depending on festivals, weather, special events, holidays, and other conditions. Avoid weekend mornings and afternoon as the Maokong Gondola is very popular with families and wait time will be very long.
What our experts tell about this experience.
I remembered my first trip on the gondola. I was very eager to see everything that I had no problem occupying the crystal cabins all to myself. Immediately I whip out my camera and took dazzling photos of the sky above, the plants below, and the towers that are visible from the distance!
