The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) consists of NGV International and the NGV Australia. Both are must-sees located in Melbourne, each with their own permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Full details of what’s on in Melbourne’s NGV may be found by checking the museums’ website.

NGV International

  • The NGV International houses an extensive art collection from Europe, Asia, America, and Oceania. 
  • It is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm, except on Anzac Day when it is only open from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, and Christmas Day when it is closed. 
  • General entry to the museum is free, but certain temporary exhibitions may require purchasing an admission ticket. 
  • Tours are available for the permanent collection, and temporary exhibitions are free of charge. However, you will still have to purchase admission tickets where applicable. Advanced booking for the tours is not required. 
  • Dining options at the NGV International include the Garden Restaurant, Tea Room, and Gallery Kitchen.
  • The Garden Restaurant is located on the ground level of the NGV International, and overlooks the NGV Grollo Equiset Garden with its moats and sculptures. Guests will enjoy a menu focused on seasonal produce, and may dine either inside the dining room or outside on the terrace. It is open daily from 11:00am to 4:00pm (lunch is served until 2:30pm).   • The Tea Room is located on Level 1 of the NGV International, and offers macarons, éclairs, cakes and savories, all handmade by a team of pastry chefs. It is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm.  
  • The Gallery Kitchen is located on the Ground Level of NGV International, and offers refreshments, light meals, and specials of the day. It is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm. 

NGV Australia

  • NGV Australia is the home of Australian art, presenting Indigenous and non-Indigenous art from the colonial period to the present day.
  • It is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm, except on Anzac Day when it is only open from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, and Christmas Day when it is closed. 
  • General entry to the museum is free, but certain temporary exhibitions may require purchasing an admission ticket. 
  • Tours are available for the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions free of charge. However, you will still have to purchase admission tickets where applicable. Advanced booking for the tours is not required. 
  • The dining option at the NGV Australia is the Crossbar Cafe, a bright and modern space with a view of the Yarra River. It offers light snacks, coffee, and other beverages.
