About
Within walking distance from the famous Dragon Bridge, Da Nang Cathedral or the “Pink Church” is worth a side trip for its picturesque vista and rose-colored hue. People flock to the open yard in front of the structure to take photos, while the religious go inside to attend a religious service.
History: The Da Nang Cathedral was the only Catholic church built in the city during the French colonial period. It commenced construction in 1923 spearheaded by the priest Louis Vallet for the local population of French colonists. On March 10 1924, the church officially opened its doors.
Soon enough, the “pink church” was named the “Rooster Church” or Con Ga, due to the weathercock on top of the cathedral’s bell tower. The cathedral measures about 70 meters in height, built in the Gothic style featuring medieval stained glass windows depicting the lives of saints. Behind the church is a grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a replica of the Lourdes Grotto in France.
Get there: Being in the heart of the city center, the church is easily accessed; try going early before the crowds come at 8:00am or before. You can grab a bite at the nearby Chao Han market before or after your visit. 156 Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau 1 Ward, Hai Chau District, Da Nang, Vietnam
