About
Considered one of the world’s largest musical instruments, The Bell Tower houses a set of 18 bells hanging in a purposefully-built 82.5-meter high tower in Barrack Square. Taking its name from the Swan River (which it overlooks), the bells form a sixteen-bell ring with chromatic notes.
Dating back to the 14th century, 12 of the bells are from the original St.-Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London, having been donated to the State of Western Australia as a gift in honor of the 1988 Australian bicentenary celebrations. The other six bells were recast in the modern century using metals procured from local mines.
Besides listening to its musical chimes, you can also go to the observation deck at the top of the tower and be treated to 360-degree views of the city and the river below. The gallery also has a collection of bells from all over the world, representing different cultures, which is also worth a view.
How to get there
If you’re within the Perth city centre already, you can either take a bus to Barrack Square, walk or cycle directly there.
