About
“One of the most beautiful turquoise high back country lakes I have ever been to.” — Boise, Idaho
Humantay Lake became famous as a highlight of the longer Salkantay Trek. However, the sights and landscapes around it are so stunning that people quickly came to the realization that it was worth a trip in and of itself.
Dedicate an entire day to visit this glacial body of water amidst the snow-capped peaks of Salkantay (“Savage Mountain” in Quechua) and Humantay (“Head of Gods”). This way, you’ll be able to enjoy the wonders of the pristine place without rushing through a multi-day trek.
The total walking distance required of us on this trip will be 4.7 miles or 7.5 km with an elevation gain of around 1,440 ft (440 m). If you prefer to ride a horse or donkey up the steep slopes, that’s also a fun option!
We will indulge in two buffet meals together today: one before the trailhead, and one after the excursion – both at Mollepata. We’ll definitely need them for trekking at altitudes of 14,000 ft (4,300 m) above sea level!
“Definitely worth the steep hike up and down from the lake. Gorgeous glaciers surrounded by so many colors, incredible mountains in the background and valleys below!” — Zachary, USA
