Chittorgarh Fort, Vijay Stambh & Kalika Temple Tour – Full Day

A day trip through the Indian countryside is always a good idea. Romantic ideals of the country come to life in the form of women in colorful sarees, chai stands in the most unusual places, and camels or cows roaming freely.

Your adventurous trip begins with a 2.5-hour drive through the colorful rural landscape to your destination at Chittorgarh. As you arrive at the fort, you can’t not be impressed by the setting high above the town. You’ll spend the next few hours exploring massive UNESCO World Heritage Site, learning of its eventful history highlighting the spirit of the Rajputs (ask your guide!). Although seven huge gates stand guard, this fort was actually sacked and ruined by no less than three different Mughal Emperors.

Other than the impressive fort itself, there are many treasures to be explored within her walls. The Kalikamata Temple, is one – a most captivating site dedicated to the Goddess Kali. Across the square, meanwhile, is Padmini's Palace where Alauddin Khilji was permitted to view the goddess through a mirror and fell into an all-consuming infatuation.

The Vijay Stambh, or Victory Tower, is another major attraction of the fort commemorating a major victory by Maharaja Kumbha. Made of a stunning and unusual yellow sandstone, it is intricately carved with images of mythical gods and goddesses.

Make sure to also take time to admire the seven-story high Kirti Stambha, or Tower of Fame. The image of Lord Adinath is carved over the entire tower making it a unique memorial, and is a highlight seen from the different the gardens within the fort.
