The Mekong Delta, also called the “rice bowl of Vietnam,” is a maze of criss-crossing rivers, flat flood plains, hills and wildlife. It is culturally one of the country’s richest regions and this tour will show you exactly why. As you sit aboard a speedboat, you can observe life as the locals experience it: watch as water buffaloes plow the fields, see rice being planted in rice paddies and glimpse fresh fruit hanging heavy in the orchards. It’s a fertile paradise in rural Vietnam with boats, houses and floating markets along the way. The best part? You get to experience it up close and personal.
With a tour guide narrating the history the Mekong Delta, take a post-breakfast stop at an ornate pagoda and learn about the customs of the riverbank inhabitants. Visit their markets and taste the local produce. From riding a speedboat through the Delta of Nine Dragons to a rowboat trip into the small canals of the Thu Thua area, you’ll find yourself in the midst of coconut trees in a Mekong village.
Don’t miss out on the fried Elephant Ear fish for lunch, especially as an afternoon of Mekong whisky or wine will surely figure into the itinerary. Explore the home of a traditional 3-generation family, enter a Cao Dai Temple and visit its nearby orphanage to hear more stories of rural Vietnamese life. It’s a total immersion with an authentic culture from which you can take photos, a bottle of whisky and an unforgettable experience back home.

Life along the river looked really interesting, and I loved every moment. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable about the area, food was delicious and I felt a sense of peace when we stopped by a Cao Dai temple. The sight of the monks praying or moving about was especially calming. I'd come here again, very soon.
While on vacation, I like to go to places that have the 'essence' of the city. Along the Mekong Delta I got so much more than that. There's nothing like watching the locals and buying their wares as we floated along. The countryside was beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the pagoda and learning more about Vietnam's culture.
