About

All around the world, people are seeing fewer and fewer fireflies with the passing of time. Aside from increasing loss of habitat, light pollution has also been attributed as a factor messing with the twinkling insects’ breeding patterns. Our eco-tourism partner in Puerto Princesa, Palawan initiated this Firefly Watching tour and cruise along Iwahig River to give eco-conscious visitors the chance to appreciate their glow amidst their natural habitat.

“You get to see fireflies and bioluminescent plankton which is really cool, and we had a good boatman explaining things to us.”Jen, Brisbane, Australia

Going through the mangroves away from the city lights – if you’re lucky – you will also view a breathtaking blanket of stars overhead. Many a traveler has been held in awe at the sight of the Milky Way like they’ve never seen before. The boat guide has often been said to offer up commentary on the constellations in view that evening, as well as the local environment (depending on the weather / night).

“I love how peaceful the tour was, and how much information the guide shared. It was also my first time seeing a glowing algae. It was magical.” Kate, USA

Appreciate this relaxing moment in nature, maybe even running your hands in the water to see the plankton light up. In the end you might be surprised to find that the silence, except for the sound your boat gliding through the water, was what made the tour as enjoyable as it was.
