After learning more about samurai history and the preserved building we’re in, we’ll be instructed on the proper way of holding the katana. In your authentic kimono, you will practice cutting a thick bamboo goza mat with a wooden practice sword. Prior to handling the real blade, you’ll be given a rundown on the basics of proper grip, posture and form.

Next we’ll move onto the next part of the tour: learning and participating in ‘zen philosophy’ through music and a short meditation. Singing bowls are utilised to create bell sounds that calm and clear the mind. The discipline was said to be effective in calming warriors’ minds during battle. The mental practice, however, has profound effects on one’s daily life when done on a regular basis.
