About
According to Andean legend, the sun was birthed in the shimmering deep blue of LakeTiticaca. South America’s largest lake has long been home to highland cultures, including Pre-Inca Pukara among others. Take a daytrip with us to this mystical region from Puno City and uncover Titicaca’s islands, famous for their tranquil beauty and unique ways of life.
We’ll be covering the islands of Uros and Taquile today by speedboat, which will take us less than half the travel time as usual. This will allow us to enjoy the day at a more relaxed pace, taking off-the-beaten-track routes and interacting with locals.
Our first stop is Islas Uros (Islands of Uros), 7km east of Puno. These “floating islands” are Lake Titicaca’s top attraction for the unique way they were constructed. Built entirely out of buoyant reeds from the lake’s shallows, the “islands” are constantly replenished from the top as they rot from the bottom.
It is said that the Uros (Uro) created their unusual floating villages centuries ago to distance themselves from the aggressive Collas and Incas. After visiting the reed homes and boats, we’ll re-embark our watercraft to continue the journey.
The tiny island of Taquile, 35 km east of Puno, has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its idyllic scenery 3,812 m above sea level is unique on the planet for its deep, red soil touched by strong sunlight against the backdrop of Bolivia’s snowy peaks. In 2008, Unesco inscribed Taquile’s textile arts in its “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.
Lunch will be an immersive affair; we’ll partake in cuisine typical of the region in traditional surrounds. Finally, the time will come to wrap up and travel back to Puno after a wonderful day out. Muchas gracias!
