We&rsquo;ll be covering the islands of Uros and Taquile today by speedboat, which will take us less than half the travel time as usual. This will allow us to enjoy the day at a more relaxed pace, taking off-the-beaten-track routes and interacting with locals.

Our first stop is Islas Uros (Islands of Uros), 7km east of Puno. These &ldquo;floating islands&rdquo; are Lake Titicaca&rsquo;s top attraction for the unique way they were constructed. Built entirely out of buoyant reeds from the lake&rsquo;s shallows, the &ldquo;islands&rdquo; are constantly replenished from the top as they rot from the bottom.

It is said that the Uros (Uro) created their unusual floating villages centuries ago to distance themselves from the aggressive Collas and Incas. After visiting the reed homes and boats, we&rsquo;ll re-embark our watercraft to continue the journey.

The tiny island of Taquile, 35 km east of Puno, has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its idyllic scenery 3,812 m above sea level is unique on the planet for its deep, red soil touched by strong sunlight against the backdrop of Bolivia&rsquo;s snowy peaks. In 2008, Unesco <a href="https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/taquile-and-its-textile-art-00166" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">inscribed Taquile&rsquo;s textile arts</a> in its &ldquo;Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity&rdquo;.
