About

“It was a highlight of our trip! We enjoyed it more than Machu Picchu.” Erie, Pennsylvania

Ever wanted to go ‘somewhere over the rainbow’? This day trip from Cusco will enable you to do just that, with this spectacular hike at Vinicunca, the “Mountain of Seven Colors.”

In order to get to the trailhead, we’ll drive three hours from Cusco to Cusipata. After enjoying breakfast in the foothills of Mount Ausangate, we’ll begin the climb to the lookout. But before the hike up, we’ll get a quick lesson on the history of the mountain and an overview on what to expect on the trek.

The walk is divided into 3 sections. The first is the longest and takes you from the trailhead to donkey drop off (you can take a donkey if you want to skip this part and save your energy). This is the easiest section with gradual elevation gain.

The second section takes you to the first overlook of the mountain. This part is the most difficult following a steeper slope. The next and last section, however, is the most rewarding as it’s shorter and covers the highest peak. Get the best views of the reds, yellows, purples and greens from this vantage point.

Lunch after all that walking will be a gratifying buffet feast of local dishes. Expect soup, potatoes, spaghetti, rice and assorted vegetable crudités.

“It's over 5,000 meters above sea level so the air is very, very thin. You need to pace yourself, but it's well worth it in the end. Loved the experience and the view is just too beautiful to describe.” Ida, Canada
