About
If you’re looking for some of the most dramatic and gorgeous natural scenery in Taiwan, a day trip to Taroko National Park is a must. This spectacular area filled with mountains and marble canyons was formed after a collision of tectonic plates, and remains a diverse natural ecosystem filled with waterfalls and rivers and local flora and fauna.
Ready to spend the day gazing at the park’s natural wonders? We’ll go on a scenic train ride from Taipei to Hualien on the southeast coast of Taiwan and take you to some of the park’s scenic spots, which include:
QingShui Cliff: This 21km stretch of coastal cliffs – averaging approximately 800m in height – provides a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, and was nicknamed “One of the Eight Wonders of Taiwan”.
“Spectacular view. One of the 8 wonders of Taiwan. You must come and see this for yourself. Simply breathtaking. This is the only place you can see the Pacific Ocean’s different tones of blue.” — Jo-Ann, Malaysia
Shakadang Trail: Also known as the “Mysterious Valley Trail”, the Shakadang Trail is one of the park’s more popular trails and passes through rivers, forests, and pools, with many opportunities to spot the flourishing wildlife and unique rock formations.
Swallow Grotto Trail: In this picturesque walking trail we’ll stroll through a deep ravine, marveling at the iconic ‘Chieftain’s Profile Rock’ and the gorges surrounding Liwu River, and stop to take photos of the surrounding scenery at Jinheng Bridge.
“The view was MAGNIFICENT! Hiking in Taroko Gorge while listening to the river flowing was such a dream come true. Although we were walking along ‘almost vertical cliffs’, it's quite safe. The road was well paved and handrails were built along the trail.” — Jessie
Buluowan: The Buluowan highlands were originally occupied by the aboriginal Atayal tribe. Today it is divided into two sections: The Upper Terrace which is home to a hotel and restaurant, and the Lower Terrace which houses various facilities including a cultural center with numerous exhibition halls filled with art, crafts, and multimedia presentations about the Truku and Atayal tribes.
Eternal Spring Shrine: Also known as “Changchun”, this restored temple was built to commemorate the 226 military veterans who died during the construction of the Central Cross-Island Highway, built between 1956-1960. It got its name from the nearby spring of water that flows all year round.
“Picture perfect. When you first see this shrine you are blown away by the view from across the river. It’s a nice walk and the serenity of the area is appreciated when you see the shrine up close. Well worth a visit.” — PJ, Australia
