Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate

About

The fortified village (ksar) and complex of Kasbahs at Ait Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most famous and best preserved, appearing to tumble down a slope above the Oued Mellah. The site has acted as the set for several Hollywood hits, including Lawrence of Arabia and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.

Ait Ben Haddou is as close a palace as you’ll find from Marrakech. It formerly enjoyed prosperity and power for its important position on the old Saharan caravan route. However, its population is now dwindling fast, and the village has been placed under UNESCO’s protection.

Visiting the kasbah is a must here, and thanks to recent restoration, improved access and footpaths make it easier for curious travellers. Clamber up the ancient fortified granary (agadir) at the top of the complex.

Ouarzazate: Gateway to the Desert

Pronounced ‘wa-zah-zat’, this town sits in prime position where the Dades and Draa valleys fork off from the High Atlas route. It was founded by the French in 1928 as a regional capital and Foreign Legion outpost, retaining its garrison to this day. Concrete buildings line the main street: Mohammed V Avenue, where crews filming in the region are put up in local guest houses.

Ouarzazate is strategically positioned as a gateway to the Sahara, and many travelers to and from the desert end up making a stop here. The place, like Ait Ben Haddou, has played a role in the film industry, including setting for the Kingdom of Heaven and Alexander. Directors have chosen the place for its good light, cheap labor and surrounding mountain and desert locations.

Taourirt Kasbah is the landmark to see here, an 18th century historical site at the eastern end of town. During the 1930s, it was one of the largest kasbahs in the area, housing the Glaoui clan’s lesser-known members along with hundreds of servants and slaves. These days, restoration is ongoing under UNESCO’s watchful eye.

Visitors usually get to see the part facing the main road, which has been maintained: the principal courtyard, former harem, and some rooms around a central airwell.
