About

The oldest living rainforest in the world

Listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, the Daintree Forest is estimated to be around 135 million years old – the oldest living rainforest in the world, and another of the “must-sees” among Cairns’ tourist attractions

Covering over 12,000 square kilometers, the rainforest is a natural marvel full of history and biology. It presents different opportunities to discover and learn more about its wonders from secret swim holes to jungle hikes and rides.

To get in some basic knowledge and history, first head to the Daintree Discovery Centre. Learn more about the origins of the ancient rainforest, the history of indigenous cultures in the environment, and marvel at the wide variety of flora and fauna in this award-winning, world class facility. Whether through a self guided or professionally facilitated tour, there is more than enough to take in at this place.

Another way to get up close and personal with the wildlife in the area is through a river cruise. You can choose from one hour to half day cruises, and be ready to photograph the incredible sights as you float along the river.

Yet another magnificent spot among things to do in Cairns, Australia is the Mossman Gorge – traditional homeland of the indigenous Kuku Yalanji people. Stroll along the boardwalk and through the lower rainforest canopy while listening to tales of history and culture as shared by the aboriginal guide(s). They might even teach some techniques like spear fishing, catching crabs, and making medicine out of natural ingredients found in the area.

Ziplining

One of the best ways to experience a rainforest? Zipline through the canopy. Located deep in the heart of the lush greenery, this activity provides a fully interactive experience, through all levels of the ecosystem.

With human hamster wheels and ziplines that allow uninterrupted views of the glorious trees, sparkling streams and famous Great Barrier Reef, this is surely one unforgettable way to get around Daintree.

After, you can take a break from adrenaline pumping ziplines and stroll through the quaint Daintree Village. With its unique curation of stores that sell local arts and crafts like handmade pottery, textiles, clothing, and more, this is one place to visit for authentic souvenirs. You can also try visiting the Janbal Gallery, an aboriginal art centre filled with artifacts and art pieces inspired by the reef and rainforest surroundings.

Opt to hit two birds with our Cape Tribulation and Daintree Rainforest Tour. Take a car across the river to the Daintree Ferry and pass through the amazing rainforest before glimpsing scenic views of the coast. Try to spy the endangered cassowary, an elusive flightless bird that can stand up to six and a half feet tall

How to Get There
