About
The Gili Islands, or simply the Gilis, is a group of three ‘gili’ or ‘little’ islands just off of Lombok: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. Hundreds of travelers head to the Gilis every year for some fun in the sun beach time and snorkeling, as well as some serious partying. The small islands are packed with clubs, restaurants, and even treehouse bars. Despite the modernization, there are no motorized vehicles allowed on the Gili Islands, and the way to get around is by bicycle or cidomo, a local horse-drawn cart.
For the ultimate party experience, head to the largest island, Gili Trawangan (regulars find that ‘Gili T’ rolls off the tongue better). The northern side of the island serves as a secluded getaway for honeymooning couples or families, further away from the raucous festive scenes.
The smaller Gili Meno in between the other two, thirty minutes away by boat from Gili Trawangan, only has a population of about 500 people. The main livelihood is tourism, fishing, and working at a coconut plantation. It is the quietest of the islands with a strong local character, and electricity and water are linked directly to the Lombok supply.
Gili Air, the closest to Lombok, offers up fun snorkeling and lively coral reefs with many a turtle spotted off the coast. Watersports such as stand up paddle boarding and kitesurfing are also available on the island. Travelers can also find local culinary instruction at Gili Cooking Classes.
GETTING THERE
Boats from Bali and Lombok regularly service routes to the Gili Islands. Public ferries and flights land at Lombok, where you need to take a two hour ride to the northwestern region, and another thirty minute boat ride to Gili Air. Boat rides are easily available between the Gili Islands.
