Finding Treasure in a Gold Mining Town

In the northern coast of Taiwan is the small mountain-side village of Jiufen, once a prosperous gold mining town. Only 50km from the city, this unique locale among Taipei tourist spots makes for a fantastic day trip from the city. 

During the Qing Dynasty, Jiufen was isolated until gold was discovered during the Japanese period, which is when the town rapidly developed. After World War II, however, the gold mining industry declined and finally ceased, transforming this little town into a historical highlight among Taiwan tourist attractions. 

Forever etched in popular memory thanks to films like A City of Sadness and Spirited Away, the town is a memento of Taiwanese history. 

To this day, many of the buildings remain unchanged, adding to the architectural charm. Cobblestone streets and winding alleys are dotted with retro cafes, tea houses and stores. To add to the atmosphere are the views – the town looks out over slopes of forests and far out to the Pacific Ocean.

Nearby, also along the northern coast of Taiwan, are amazing natural attractions:

• Golden Waterfall: Connected to the Pacific Ocean and Yin-Yang sea, this impressive waterfall makes for an essential photo stop. They say the golden cliffside almost glitters, earning it the name.
• Nanya Rock: Look out over bizarre rock patterns driving through one of Taiwan’s most famous roads. Millennia of coastal erosion have caused these rock formations to resemble otherworldly cone shapes.
• The Bay of Two Colours: This picturesque bay is made up of contrasting blue and yellow waters. Not only is it stunning to view and photograph, the Taiwanese also relate it to yin and yang.
