Perfume Pagoda

Bathe in the Aroma of spring in the Perfume Pagoda in Hanoi

About

Why you should add this place to your itinerary: When it comes to the five senses, the sense of smell can evoke even the deepest of memories. If you are the type of traveler who loves to have your senses ignited, then a visit to the Perfume Pagoda located outside the city should be on your list of Hanoi places to visit.

Plan your visit

Built into the limestone mountains of Huong Tich, the Perfume Pagoda is a scenic spot for those who want to glimpse Vietnam’s greener area. The spring blossoms that riddle the majestic landscape emit a fresh and sweet aroma – giving the place its name.

Though the destination sounds like it is only made up of one attraction, the Perfume Pagoda is actually a vast complex that houses more than one Buddhist temple. At the center is Huong Tich Cave, where most visitors – both local and foreign – flock. Besides the fact that its opening is shaped like a dragon’s mouth, it is also home to the revered statue of Lord Buddha.

Note: Though the Perfume Pagoda is filled with spectacular and scenic views, keep in mind that the place is revered as a holy site. A lot of Vietnamese pilgrims embark on a journey here to rejuvenate their souls, and – during the commencement of the lunar calendar – celebrate with a long festival. If you are visiting this attraction, do respect the country’s culture and act mindfully.

How to get there

  • The best way to get to the Perfume Pagoda is on a wooden or iron boat. However, to get to the docking point you will need to drive 60km southwest of Hanoi and into the Huong Son Mountain range.

  • From there, embark where the sign indicates: Ben Yen/Yen Vy, 1km away. The boat ride is also part of the experience because while traversing the clear waters, you will be treated to scenes of Vietnam’s agricultural life.

  • If you don’t want to worry about logistics, join a Hanoi Perfume Pagoda boat tour, complete with 3 attractions, a boat ride, free lunch, and entrance fees.
