About

Fondly called “Playa” by its denizens, Playa del Carmen is a fast-growing international community populated by Americans, Canadians, and Europeans. Packed with lively bars, eateries, clubs, boutiques and hotels, the place is decidedly pedestrian-friendly as opposed to car-friendly. Avenida-5 is the main drag, a cobbled street crowded with party-goers on its south end, and stylish brunch and shopping on the north.

Beach clubs and massage places line the shore from Calle 8 to 46. This stretch covers the popular Mamita’s Beach and Playa del Carmen Main Beach. The latter is not great for snorkeling though; instead, head to Coco Beach near Calle 46. You can swim out to the Chuzunbul Reef here, or to the shallower and calmer waters of the north.

“Playacar’s” southern beaches are the domain of all-inclusive resorts. Further are awesome natural theme parks that promise fun for days on end, including Xplor, Xenses, Xcaret and Rio Secreto.
