Plaza Guadalajara & The Cathedral

Most tourist places in Mexico begin at the town’s main plaza and cathedral. Guadalajara is no different, with Plaza Guadalajara acting as the meeting point of church, government and civil society.

About

Colonial History

Most tourist places in Mexico begin at the town’s main plaza and cathedral. Guadalajara is no different, with Plaza Guadalajara acting as the meeting point of church, government and civil society.

The main square is typically filled with crowds of people entertained by street performers and wandering musicians. It was formerly known as the Plaza de los Laureles for its topiaried laurel trees, facing the cathedral’s main west entrance. To the north lies the Presidencia Municipal.

Guadalajara’s cathedral, meanwhile, is one of the city’s most iconic buildings – a quintessential stop for all tourists, being as old as the city itself. Since its beginnings in 1561, the building had been partially destroyed several times by earthquakes. Hence, while the cathedral was being constructed, it was also being restored in different architectural styles, and was finally completed after 50 years of work in 1618.

From afar, the cathedral’s distinctive twin golden towers can be seen from a distance, making it a recognizable landmark of Guadalajara. Stepping in, you will find many items of interest, such as the Gothic crypt, a reliquary containing the waxed remains of Santa Inocencia, the work of Spanish artist Bartolomé Murillo, “La Asuncion de la Virgen”, and the largest organ in Mexico.

As you make your way to the altar, follow the stained glass windows depicting the Last Supper. The surrounding area of the cathedral was extended from Plaza Liberación to the Instituto Cultural Cabañas, creating Plaza Tapatía
