About

Sensoji Temple (Kannon Temple) is a staple among the top 10 things to do in Tokyo. Located in Asakusa, it is the oldest and most celebrated temple in the city — a Buddhist shrine instituted over a thousand years before the city was established.

According to popular lore, two brothers fishing in the nearby Sumida River (circa 628 AD) netted the catch of their lives: a small golden statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of happiness and mercy. The temple was erected in her honor, and worshipers have flocked here seeking favors for centuries.

In 1945, Sensoji Temple burned down during a bombing raid, and was rebuilt with donations from the Japanese people. After dark, its pagoda remains illuminated ‘til 11pm.

To get inside the grounds, you’ll have to enter through the Kaminarimon (thunder gate), which is the symbol of Tokyo. You’ll then be met by a historical 200m-shopping street called Nakamise, where you can buy a variety of Japanese souvenirs and foods. Nakamise ends at the Hozomon Gate, which is the second gate of the Sensoji Temple.
