The Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon’s Golden Point

About

Visiting sacred destinations has become quite popular over the years. A lot of people are intrigued with how much of the devotee’s faith are placed within these structures, which were built so long ago. The minds behind these places of worship would not have thought that their creations would entice today’s generation nor tell their tales through detailed art. Nevertheless, these monuments have transformed the lives of millions of people and are now known as symbols of their religious culture. The perfect example that embodies this ideal is the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar’s city of Yagon.

The Shwedagon Pagoda casts a powerful shadow over the people living in the city and is known to dominate its skyline. Standing over 325 feet, this sacred space is the most important Buddhist pagoda in the country for it is known to house four relics, which were owned by the four previous Buddhas. Travelers, who are seeing this colossal structure with their very eyes, are astounded with how its piercing stupa glistens in the sky, which is made from plates made out of gold and diamonds that encrust the tip. The Shwedagon Pagoda is surely the most glorious structure that was built in the streets of Yangon and is virtually impossible for travelers to miss.

Since the pagoda is a sacred destination, Trip Guru would like to remind interested visitors that there is a certain dress code that should be followed. You must wear trousers, shorts, or skirts that at least cover the knees. As for the top, t-shirts that cover the elbows are appropriate. Also, before entering the premises, you need to take off your shoes. Follow these simple rules and your visitation won’t be so troublesome.

To get to the Shwedagon Pagoda from Yangon International Airport, you can take a private car or public transport and drive towards Pyay Road. After 7.3km, turn left before slightly turning left onto Hledan Jct Skyway after 800m. Stay on Pyay Road and after 1.1km continue on U Wisara Road. The pagoda is opened daily from 4:00AM to 10:00PM (but is 24-hours on special days). Entrance fee costs around 8,000 MMK.
