Tegalalang Rice Terraces Place guide

Tegalalang Rice Terraces can be found just north outside of Ubud, with some awe-inspiring views of the cascading terraces sloping on the hillsides. The traditional irrigation system developed by the Balinese in the 9th century, called subak, feeds the verdant fields.

Explore the rice paddies by following the path from the road, where local farmers might ask you for a small donation to enter. Sometimes they may also ask for an extra IDR50,000 if you want to take a photo in their field.

It’s best to visit in the morning before the crowds arrive, but the rice terraces may be more photogenic in the early morning or sunset in the afternoon.

Take a break or have a slow morning at one of the cafes located along the roadside, or visit the kiosks selling their wares. Snap a photo at the Love Bali sign near the entrance to the paddies and don’t forget to bring water and snacks if you’ll be exploring the fields.

GETTING THERE

Only a twenty-minute drive from Ubud, or a one to two-hour drive from south Bali, drive your rented motorbike or car hire to the roadside entrance of the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. Note that there is a small parking fee for private vehicles.
