Templo Expiatorio del Santisimo Sacramento

This architectural jewel resembles the neo-Gothic style, characterized by stone columns and high mosaic stained-glass windows.

About

Also located in Centro Histórico, the Templo Expiatorio del Santisimo Sacramento began construction in 1897, but was completed much later in 1972. This architectural jewel resembles the neo-Gothic style, characterized by stone columns and high mosaic stained-glass windows.

This modern church was modelled on Orvieto cathedral in Italy, featuring innovative glasswork and an attractive altarpiece. Furthermore, the church makes itself known throughout the city through its unique bells: every hour, the Twelve Apostles rotate in and out of the clock tower, while a 25-bell carillon plays musical tunes throughout the day.

If you go during weekend afternoons, you’ll find the plaza teeming with life: vendors selling all sorts of delectable food catering to the many mass-goers.

Museo de las Artes

On their tour of Guadalajara, travelers combine their trip to Templo Expiatorio with the Museo de las Artes to the north. The museum houses temporary exhibitions, usually of modern art. You can find it ‘round the back of the Rectoria General of the University of Guadalajara

Universidad de Guadalajara

Think: broader streets filled with younger people, littered with plenty of good restaurants and cafes. Make the 15-minute walk west along Juarez from the center until you arrive at Parque Revolucion on Federalismo, west of the former Convent of Carmen (or vice versa).

Inside the university, visit the Rectoria General, which contains some of Jose Clemente Orozco’s most important murals – among the first he painted in Guadalajara. You can find them by going to the main hall (paraninfo), and checking out the frescoed dome and front wall.
