About
Japan’s largest fish and produce market since 1935 – the iconic Tsukiji Market – closed on October 2018. Four days later, it reopened as Toyosu Market handling 2,000 tonnes of seafood a day for Tokyo and its surrounding zones.
Although Tsukiji used to allow visitors free roam of its tuna auction site and wholesale stalls, the overwhelming number of tourists forced a clampdown on the policy. The new facility prohibits visitors from its wholesale floor, restricting people to observation platforms from which to view the auction.
As Tsukiji was, Toyosu is home to stalls serving the freshest fish you’ll ever taste in your life, but with more visitor-friendly features such as the rooftop garden with views of the waterfront. Its prime location was a consideration for the development of the 2020 Olympics. You can also wander the Outer Market – the last remainder of Tsukiji as it once was – where rows of retail shops and stalls sell seafood, dried fish, seaweed, knives and other cooking supplements.
Take a tour to make the most of Tsukiji / Toyosu Market — you’ll be able to understand the chaos better with a local guide to unpack it all for you:
