About
Just 80km from Yangon, the region of Bago is rich with history, religious monuments and royal palaces. Formerly known as Pegu, it was once an affluent empire, as reflected in the many decadent, preserved attractions. Over the course of the day we’ll visit the best ones by air-conditioned car.
‘’Bago is host to countless temples and many of them are well worth a visit.’’ – Sommertage
Allied War Cemetery: Also known as Taukkyan War Cemetery, this is one of the best places to understand Myanmar’s history, and one of the most notable war sites in all of Asia. Here you’ll find the graves of 6,374 British soldiers who died during the Second World War.
Shwethalyaung Buddha: Dating back to the year 994, this ancient reclining Buddha measures 55 metres in length. Like other reclining statues found around Southeast Asia, it represents the wise female form of the Buddha. She’s truly a sight to behold!
Shwemawdaw Pagoda: Often called the Golden God Temple, this stupa holds a secret: it’s actually the tallest temple in Myanmar, despite the fact that Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda usually gets credit for this!
Kambawzathardi Golden Palace: This stunning palace decked out in gold detailing is one of Myanmar’s best-preserved hidden gems. Here you can wander the royal grounds and feel the splendour of the old Burmese Empire. Don’t miss the replica King’s coach decorated with gold leaf and peacocks!
‘’The palace is beautiful and the attention to detail is stunning.’’ – ntflady, Trip Advisor
Kyaikpun Pagoda: At this unusual religious site dating back to the 7th Century, four Buddha statues sit back-to-back. You won’t find similar statues anywhere else in Myanmar, so snap your photos before we transfer you back to your accommodation!
