About

“I didn't know this place is so magical... wow what an unbelievable landscape! Anyone who is in the area, even if you are in Bali... you MUST go and see this! It's absolutely spectacular, amazing, mind-blowing!”Saby, Singapore

When National Geographic published an article in 2014 about a volcano emitting ‘stunning electric-blue flames,’ Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen Volcano became an instant sensation. Today, tourists flock to witness the captivating colors and scenic views of this active volcano, and we’re taking you to experience it safely while still feeling up close to this natural wonder.

Day 1: Bali–Ferry to Ketapang–Ijen Volcano

You'll cross from Bali to Java by ferry, watching the narrow Bali Strait open up as you leave the island behind. The drive through the highlands to the Bromo area is your first taste of East Java's scale — a landscape of green valleys, volcanic ridgelines, and local villages that most visitors never pass through.

Day 2: Ijen Volcano–Crater–Bromo Village

Day two starts at 3:00 AM. Your 4WD jeep rumbles out of the accommodation and onto the volcanic sand plains of the Tengger Caldera, one of the largest calderas in the world. At Bukit Kingkong or Seruni Point — whichever delivers the clearest view — you'll watch the sun drag itself over the horizon and flood the caldera with orange light. Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak, looms in the background. Then it's down to the crater itself: a 45-minute climb up the rim with sulfurous plumes drifting past and the caldera floor stretching out below you. This is one of Indonesia's most-photographed sunrise spots, and it earns every frame.

Day 3: Bromo Village–Bromo Volcano Sunrise–Bali

The third day belongs to Ijen. The trek begins at 1:00 AM from Pos Pendakian Paltuding — a two-hour hike up through the dark with your local guide and gear in hand. What you're hiking toward is one of the rarest natural phenomena on Earth: the blue fire of Kawah Ijen, produced when pressurized sulfuric gas ignites on contact with air. As dawn arrives, the acid crater lake — turquoise, vast, and utterly surreal — comes into view. Your local guide has made this climb hundreds of times and knows exactly where to position you for both the blue fire and the sunrise.

“...Simply breathtaking and mystical with mist and clouds covering a sea of sand. The wait for the sunrise is totally worth it and will leave you wanting more.”Manish, Singapore

Throughout the three days, your English-speaking driver navigates every ferry, road transfer, and logistics handoff — including the time zone change between Bali and Java — so nothing falls through the cracks. TripGuru works exclusively with local guides and certified operators, and all emissions from this tour are measured and offset as part of our carbon-neutral commitment.
