About
Forget the hour-long queue that stacks up outside the Peak Tram station every morning; your version of this climb starts on foot. From the Chater Garden exit at Central MTR, you weave through Central's colonial backstreets, passing St. John's Cathedral and the Peak Tram's lower terminus, where the line is already forming behind the turnstiles as you walk on by.
Duck into the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens and watch nineteenth-century flowerbeds give way, block by block, to subtropical canopy. The skyscrapers thin out, the birdsong picks up, and if you look up you'll likely spot a black kite circling on a thermal, one of the dozens that patrol the Peak's updrafts year-round.
The real climb starts here, up a paved incline that ties into the wider Peak Trail network. Your guide will point out where wealthy residents once paid porters to carry them up this same slope by sedan chair, decades before the Peak Tram opened in 1888. Clearings along the way frame the Mid-Levels apartment towers jutting out of the jungle, a view most Peak Tower crowds never get to see.
At the top, the trail flattens into Lugard Road, a narrow cliffside walkway cantilevered over the mountainside between 1913 and 1914. This is the spot: an unbroken sweep of Victoria Harbour, Kowloon, and the financial district that tends to stop conversation mid-sentence, and the exact frame worth setting your phone to panorama for. Century-old banyan trees and moss-covered stone walls line the path, proof that Hong Kong's densest skyline sits right up against real wilderness.
The walk ends at Peak Galleria, where you can grab a coffee, browse the lookout deck, or join the tram queue back down, your choice, since you already beat the crowd going up. Every TripGuru hike here runs with a local, English-speaking guide who knows these trails properly, and as a GSTC-certified, carbon-neutral operator, we keep this route exactly as low-impact as it looks.
