Istanbul is the most populous city in Turkey and the historical, cultural and economic center of the country. It is a transcontinental city it separates Europe from Asia, two-thirds of the population live in the European part of the town. Istanbul is one of the most populated cities in the world and the most populated in Europe with 15 million inhabitants. Most of the population is of the Muslim religion, but there is also a Christian and a Jewish part.
The historic areas of Istanbul were declared World Heritage by Unesco in 1985, for its famous monuments and historical remains. Istanbul has long, mild and humid summers as well as cold, rainy and snowy winters.
